Internal wave dynamics on the Australian Northwest Shelf (NWS) - Nicole L Jones

The continental slope and shelf of Northwest Australia is a region of strong nonlinear internal wave generation and dissipation that results from strong tidal flows. We use a combination of field observations and numerical modelling to understand processes as large as the interaction of the remotely and locally generated internal tides, down to the mixing resulting from shoaling internal waves. I will present an overview of some of our recent studies, including:

  1. The interaction of remotely and locally generated internal tides on the slope and shelf
  2. The generation of large amplitude mode-2 internal wave trains
  3. Observations of near-bed instabilities resulting from shoaling nonlinear internal waves of elevation.
