Three early career researchers from the Research School of Earth Sciences have been recognized by the Australian Academy of Science for advancing scientific research
Dr Mark Hoggard Dr Adele Morrison and Dr Caroline Eakin, have each received prestigious honorific awards, acknowledged for the depth, rigour and impact of their work from Earth sciences and climate research.
Dr Mark Hoggard is an observational geodynamicist at the Australian National University who studies how Earth’s surface changes are linked to processes deep within the planet. His research focuses on important real-world issues such as sea-level change, mineral resource discovery, and distinguishing nuclear tests from natural earthquakes. He is known for combining methods from multiple scientific fields and collaborating widely across academia and government. With over 50 publications and international recognition, his work has had meaningful impacts in both policy and industry.
Dr Caroline Eakin is a seismologist at the Australian National University who studies Earth’s interior using seismic waves from earthquakes. Her work helps link deep Earth processes, like mantle convection, to surface phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanoes. By deploying seismometers in diverse and remote locations, she has made key discoveries about how tectonic plates behave beneath the surface, including their deformation, deep mantle upwelling, and previously hidden aspects of Australia’s tectonic history.
Dr Adele Morrison is a climate scientist at Australian National University who studies how climate change will impact the Southern Ocean and Antarctica. Using ocean physics and advanced computer models, she predicts changes in ocean circulation, carbon cycling, and marine ecosystems. Her research also examines how Antarctic coastal waters and the ice sheet will respond to warming, with implications for global sea-level rise. She has played a key role in advancing Australia’s Antarctic ocean modeling capabilities and leads efforts in ocean–sea ice modeling.
