Projects using SWOT water surface elevation data
The Surface Water and Ocean Topography mission uses radar interferometry to detect the water surface elevation of lakes, rivers etc. The mission data can quantify environmental flows to wetlands, flood volumes and even water extraction and on-farm storage for farm irrigation.
Projects using SWOT satellite data are related to the quantification of
- available water in ecosystems, including GDEs,
- the provision of environmental flows, and whether the water allocated arrives where it is needed,
- errors and accuracies of the mission data, and how to improve it
- major floods across the Australian landscape and how floodwaters feed into state water accounting processes
