About
<Draft> Olivine is the most abundant mineral in the Earth’s mantle, and as such it controls the rheology and physical properties of the mantle. Due to its tight crystalline structure, olivine is very poor in trace elements that geochemists use to assess the succession of melting and metasomatic events that “shaped” the sub-continental lithosphere.
However, recent advances in thermometry and in analytical techniques allow today to use olivine as a mantle probe. In this study, we will examine the abundance, fractionation and distribution of trace elements in natural and experimental samples with known pressure-temperature conditions and composition. The aim is to establish olivine as a crucial mineral indicator for both academic research and industry exploration.
