I joined the ACCLIMATE-2 voyage in February 2020, sailing from Durban, South Africa, to -53 degrees south and back again. We collected seafloor sediment using multi-cores, box cores and calypso cores along the way.

An image taken under transmitted light of an unusually large layered porphyritic olivine chondrule (quenched molten droplets in space) in a >4.5 billion years old meteorite (CR carbonaceous chondrite). The dark spherical grains in the chondrule are Fe-Ni metal and the dark groundmass around the chondrule is the clay-rich opaque matrix.
