Master of Philosophy
Overview
The Master of Philosophy is a graduate degree for students wishing to develop their research expertise in the Earth Sciences.
The degree is predominantly a research project, but may include some coursework. Candidates are required to complete a research thesis comprising original research. The aim of the M.Phil. research degree is to train students in the skills and techniques required to carry out independent research, either individually, or as part of a team.
The student and supervisor(s) initially identify a suitable research project. As the project progresses, students are expected to take more control of its direction. M Phil students are typically involved in presenting conference papers, publishing research results in journals, and participating in local seminars as part of their research training.

Degree structure
The duration of the M Phil is typically 2 years of full-time research, or the equivalent in part-time research.
Each candidate is considered individually and any coursework requirements are discussed with the candidate prior to enrolment.
Supervision
Students are assigned a supervisor. Co-supervisors and academic advisers will also be appointed to form a supervisory panel. Students are expected to consult closely with their supervisor(s). The role of the supervisor(s) is to provide students with regular assistance, advice and support and encouragement for a timely and successful completion of the chosen project. How to apply
Who can apply?
The program is open to local and international students who hold a Bachelors degree from a recognised institution with Honours of at least 2A level in a relevant field, or have completed a Graduate Diploma. Relevant professional experience, in lieu of an honours degree or Graduate diploma, may be taken into consideration.
Applicants are recommended to discuss their proposed program of study and topic with a staff member before submitting an application. Admission is not automatic. Applicants who do not satisfy the minimum entry standard may be able to enter through satisfactory completion of a preparatory program.

The entry requirements are a Bachelors degree from a recognised institution with Honours of at least 2A level in a relevant field, or have completed a Graduate Diploma. Relevant professional experience, in lieu of an honours degree or Graduate diploma, may be taken into consideration.
